From Amanda July 2014 Fenland Dogs become Good Citizens The Fenland Dog Club, based in Ely, have launched a new initiative to help local dogs become good citizens. The scheme run by The Kennel Club helps to educate owners on the responsibilities of good dog ownership and best practice in handling and training. In early July 10 dogs and their handlers from the Fenland Dog Club passed their Bronze certificate and are now well on their way to becoming better citizens. Both dogs and handlers are tested on walking on a lead, control with other people and dogs, recall and basic care. Amanda Wall, Founder of The Fenland Dog Club and Master Trainer with the Guild of Dog Trainers, commented “Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and theirs. It increases the bond between you both and it can be a lot of fun. ‘Happy dog, happy owner’ is our motto, and it always helps towards a harmonious household. We find dogs are usually eager to learn and the key to success is good communication and consistency. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like them to behave and training is as much about training the owner as well as your dog.” The scheme is non-competitive and open to dogs of all ages. 5 top training tips from Fenland Dog Club: 1. Practice in the safely of your home and garden first, before trying commands in public places 2. Be patient and consistent, don’t expect too much too soon training a new behaviour takes time and effort. 3. Keep sessions short (15 minutes max.) and enjoyable for both you and your dog. Don’t let your dog get bored. 4. Don’t tell your dog off, shout or physically punish them if they get it wrong. Finish the session and try again another time. Avoid training them if you or they are tired. 5. Always try to finish on a high note - your dog is more likely to want to train again next time. Have a game with your dog or give them an enjoyable chew treat
