From : Animal Rights in Israel Stopping the ritual abuse of chickens. As Yom Kippur draws near, activists are working hard to prevent the senseless abuse and slaughter of chickens in the annual kapparot ritual. This ritual, commonly practiced on the eve of Yom Kippur, involves swinging a live chicken over ones head, and then publicly slaughtering the chicken. While the ritual has drawn criticism from the animal rights movement in modern times, it has also been strongly condemned historically and recently by many of the great Jewish leaders, who suggest using a bundle of coins instead of a live animal. Anonymous for Animal rights is offering free posters and fliers with the words of these prominent Rabbis to distribute and hang up near synagogues throughout Israel, in order to stop this cruel practice.
