From Ashlee Holm I appreciate the sentiment behind that cartoon about Ebola and other health concerns in America. But could you all maybe stop posting something thats so blatantly fat shaming? Being fat does not cause death. Believe it or not, obesity itself does not cause death, especially considering the different definitions and categorizations of fatness and obesity. And including being fat--a body type influenced by a myriad of factors--with addictive substances is wrong and harmful both for people who are fat and people who are living with addiction. Language matters in things like this, so say what you mean. Say that we live in a capitalist society designed to harm workers (and everyone other than those in power) at the expense of profit and we are often unable to obtain healthcare that we need. Say that the efficiency and financial access that comes with things like fast food help to alleviate stress and help with basic survival for those who need it, even if they may not always be the healthiest meals. Otherwise all youre doing is perpetuating the idea that people who are fat--people like me and many other people you love--are wrong and bad and to be shamed. Or, you know, say that you enjoy the self-righteousness that comes with the inherent classism of looking down on peoples food choices. Say that shaming people for being fat is not only the easy way out of deconstructing these things but also makes you feel better about yourself. Id like to know who I need to get out of my life. Im not going to argue this and I am not going to tolerate any fat shaming comments disguised as concern (or any fat shaming comments in general). Just know that when you post things like that, I trust you less and less
