From Atty Jaime G Hofileña, Vice President for Social Development, Ateneo de Manila University: Dear members of the Ateneo de Manila University community and friends, The University (through its Disaster Response and Management [DReaM] Team) endorses the call of its fellow Jesuit university, Ateneo de Naga (AdNU, through its Center for Community Development), for financial support for AdNU’s relief/response operations for families affected by the seismic situation at the vicinity of Mount Mayon in Albay province. Even as no explosive eruption has yet taken place, a soft eruption has started with short and stubby lava segments flowing out of the volcanos crater. Moreover, disaster risk mitigation efforts were undertaken sometime back, causing the preemptive evacuation of some 12,857 families (57,567 persons) to 48 evacuation centers as of October 7. 2014 (per Oct. 7, 2014 Report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council). Alert Level 3 issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is still in effect for the volcano and its environs, with speculation that this may be raised to level 4 soon and which may cause more evacuees to transfer out of harms way. AdNU indicates that donations of funds will be used to meet logistical and financial requirements for organizing and carrying out the following: a. Training of a stress management and counseling group, b. Preparation/distribution of relief goods/materials, and c. Deployment and delivery of such relief goods. AdNU particularly looks upon the competence of the Ateneo de Manila’s own Psychology Department for providing key training of Bicol-based stress management and counseling volunteers. Your contributions would therefore help realize and extend this important service of a specific segment of our own University, apart from providing other forms of response through AdNU. Listed below are details on the various means for donating funds directly to AdNU. Thank you for your continued concern for and solidarity with our fellowmen and women in need, as reached by the network of Jesuit institutions in the Philippines.
