From Barnet MPS.... On Saturday, 30 August, Barnet Police Station hosted its first open day in nearly five years, led by officers from Barnet and Whetstone Neighbourhoods Policing Teams along with the assistance of the Met Specials Constabulary (MSC) and Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC). The event which lasted over four hours gave local residents a chance to come and visit the police station, meet with their local police officers, community support officers and take part in a number of free events. Officers from a number of the neighbourhood policing teams were on hand to engage with their local residents and provide them with crime prevention advice, as well as giving them a chance to ask any questions they had of officers. There was also a chance for visitors to dress up in variety of police uniform and equipment and have their photos taken with officers. Specialist units from around the Met attended the event to show off their equipment and training. There were visits from Mounted Branch (Horses), Dog Section as well as an impressive fly over by the police helicopter (India 99). Driving school also kindly provided two historic police vehicles; a Rover SD1 and a classic Land Rover which visitors of all ages enjoyed getting a chance to look around. Local businesses were also on hand throughout the day, providing refreshments, entertainment and activities to visitors free of charge. Local theatre school The Bull Theatre provided music for the event, as well as helping to design and produce the promotional material for the day. Representatives from the local branches of Tesco, Waitrose, Starbucks and McDonalds kindly provided a variety of refreshments for visitors and officers as well as offering activities such as face painting, colouring and dressing up. Other local businesses included the Rolling Bus community hub that provided further activities for children, including badge making, rowing machines and giant chess, and the local press. Local MP Theresa Villiers and Councillor David Longstaff also showed their support by dropping into the event and posing for photos with the Neighbourhood Inspectors and local children. The entire day was promoted on Twitter via the @MPSBarnet account which received a record number of followers and interactions. The day came to a conclusion with a splash with Detective Inspector King and Inspector Henderson completing the “Ice Bucket Challenge” in support of the MNDA. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by both members of the local community and all the officers involved, giving a great opportunity to strengthen the relationship between local police and the community. Detective Inspector Julie Henderson said “Everyone in the local area came to see us and visit their local policing team. It was a fun day for everyone especially when presented with the ice bucket challenge at the end”. Councillor David Longstaff said, Barnet Police Station put on an excellent event. Its not every day you see an eight year old child beating a police officer, in full riot gear, with a stick. Thanks to Sgt. Ian Richardson and PC Ala Uddin for their efforts in organising such a successful day.
