From Barrow County School - Calendar change * August 1, 2014 remains as the start date for students. The rationale included students having a day to receive paperwork and review rules, etc. and then return on Monday prepared to begin a full week of learning. Additionally, it was suggested that by starting on Friday families would have the weekend to gather any supplies that are recommended on the first day of school by teachers and schools. * The modified calendar maintains the full week for fall break. * The modified calendar maintains the full week for Thanksgiving break. * The modified calendar splits the planning days at the end of the first semester and beginning of second semester at the beginning and end of the winter break. This is a change from the original calendar that was approved. * The modified calendar identifies inclement weather days as possible make-up days should they be needed. * The modified calendar increases student learning days from the 173 originally approved to 176 student learning days. The additional days have been added in May. Therefore, the last of school, graduation dates, and post-planning dates have changed slightly. We are very pleased to report that with the approval of the modified calendar we will be able to restore full schedules to all of our employees. Due to the Governors proposed FY15 budget including some restored funds from the state and an increase in our local tax digest our Board unanimously approved full schedules for all employees for the 2014-2015 school year and thus being able to avoid furlough days and/or shortened work schedules for the 2014-2015 school year. I know you join me in our appreciation for our Boards continued support, fiscal responsibility and concern to provide the very best for each of our students and employees.
