From Bill at KYTC: We all need to understand what 15 degrees and below means for road conditions. Lives could be saved if we all pay attention. We have some serious winter weather in store for us starting today, Sunday, January 5, through at least Wednesday, January 8. Snowfall expected this afternoon through tonight with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour -- whiteout conditions possible at times. Temperatures drop to below 0 by Monday morning and likely to stay that way for 24 hours. High winds will create the worst wind chill factor weve seen in more than a decade. Heres what you need to know: Our crews do an excellent job handling our typical snow events, but the extreme temperatures that are going to follow this snow are not typical at all. While salt alone works to about 20 degrees, the addition of liquid calcium chloride works to about 12-15 degrees. Although the sun will hopefully shine and help some during the day on Monday and Tuesday, temperatures are likely to be well below 15 degrees for the biggest parts of these two days. Add the wind and subsequent wind chill and our drivers will be up against impossible conditions. For these reasons, even when the snow stops on Monday, your roads may not become clear for quite some time, until the temperature rises. The limitations of our materials (salt and liquid calcium chloride) mean that as temperatures drop into the single digits, we will only plow snow. Any application of materials would be useless. If the forecast holds, crews may not even be out on Monday and Tuesday nights because the precipitation will be over, plowing will be finished, and temperatures are expected to be too low for us to be effective applying chemicals. We all need to evaluate how truly important it is to be driving in these conditions. We cannot make you stay home. This is all we can do: give you the information and trust you to make your driving decisions wisely. Be safe out there. Better yet, dont be out there.
