From Bob Weeks Score Golf This week marks the final stop on PGA Tour Canada’s inaugural season with the Tour Championship taking place at Sunningdale G&CC in London, Ont. There’s a lot on the line come Sunday with the top five players on the Order of Merit earning Web Tour status next year (full status for the money leader and conditional for the next four) and the next five players earning direct passes to the final stage of Web Tour Q-School. Obviously the Web Tour cards have been the carrots the players have been chasing all year, but don’t discount the direct passes to final stage either. Avoiding the pratfalls that come with having to navigate through first and second stage is huge and even those players finishing 11th to 20th on the money list, who get a pass to second stage, will be breathing a sigh of relief. You can bet there will be some number crunching among competitors Sunday evening at Sunningdale. The circuit’s first season has been largely successful. It added a tournament in the Wildfire Invitational, went to Atlantic Canada for the first time in a dozen years and when the Calgary event was dealt a blow by Mother Nature the tour was able to reschedule it during an August lull. It has many irons in the fire and I think it is very close to adding at least a 10th tournament to the schedule for next year. From a Canadian player standpoint, the top-two players on the money list are native sons — Mackenzie Hughes, who won Sunday in Cape Breton and played his way onto the tour through sponsor’s exemptions, and Riley Wheeldon, a winner earlier this season in Fort McMurray. Nick Taylor is the next highest Canuck in seventh spot and has been close to his first win on the domestic circuit many times. He would be a popular Tour Championship winner. Yep — lots on the line this week at the finale. Couldn’t really say that in previous years.
