From Bulloch County public schools: An explosion and fire at the Georgia Power substation on Veterans Parkway and U.S. Highway 301 South early this morning caused power outages for Georgia Power and Excelsior EMC customers. All of our schools had power by the start of the school day this morning. We are in contact with Georgia Power. They have notified us that power from the damaged substation is being rerouted to other substations in the area; however, to prevent these other substations from overloading, they will be initiating rolling blackouts that will last 30 minutes to one hour at a time throughout the day. This will affect our schools for today, but school will proceed as normal. Our schools are prepared to handle temporary outages. We have backup generation to power emergency lighting and alarm systems and our cafeterias always have meal options like cereals for breakfast and sack lunches that dont require cooking. Also our teachers are prepared to teach with or without technology aids. If phone systems are affected, all of our schools are also equipped with 911 radio systems to reach local emergency personnel and administrators have cellular telephones to which calls can be routed. Thank you parents and students for your patience. Thank you as well to our public safety and electric utility personnel for their hard work to resolve this issue
