From CUBA....Day 9 167 species of bird.....confirmed with Orlando Garrido....coauthor of the Birds of Cuba that AMERICAN PIPIT...is a Cuban National Record...the first time anyone has reported this bird in CUBA.. Our group from Halifax River Audubon Society has also recorded a FIRST NATIONAL RECORD for a RIVER OTTER....found in the mouth of the Bay of Pigs.....which we are in the process of understanding because there are NO recorded River Otters in the WEST INDES..... So on this trip we have recorded 2 national records for Cuba...one Bird and One Mammal..... simply amazing. My coleader, Geroldo Allyon.... is ESTATIC.... as I am as well. We have had amazing luck on this trip recording all possible endemics and finding a great list of birds..... We are currently in Cayo Coco where we finished up the rest of our endemic list and we still have one more morning before starting back to Havana.... WOW what a trip. The group has been fantastic and it has been an absolute pleasure working with Geroldo, who is an expert on spiders and has been birding in Cuba for many years.... What an amazing difference from from Mount Desert Island and Maine. Cooperation and comrodarie amoung our group is a stark contrast from the situation in Maine, where a small group of people are so difficult to work with. When people work together it is amazing what they can accomplish.. Too bad certain people in Maine are so... difficult to work with and snobbish in their approach. It is also too bad the certain people in maine can´t let go of their inflated EGOS and misconceptions. Looking forward to getting back to my family whom I miss greatly. The trip to this date has been an incredible SUCESS.
