From Chief Floyd Johnson: On Saturday afternoon the department received a call from employees of the City of Athens Recreation Department saying they had received several counterfeit $20 bills. The bills had been passed between noon and 6 p.m. at the concession stands. Officer Mac McWhorter answered the call, and while he was there he was told there was another counterfeit bill that had been passed at the south concession stand. McWhorter had an employee follow the person until he could walk from the north fields to the south fields. When McWhorter arrived at the south fields the employee pointed out the person who passed the counterfeit bill. After talking with the suspect and taking possession of 7 more counterfeit $20 bills, McWhorter arrested a man for criminal possession of a forged instrument. Sgt. Johnny Campbell said the suspect told him he used his home computer to make the counterfeit bills. In all there were 18 counterfeit $20 bills recovered from the concession stands, other vendors and from the suspect.
