From: Christopher Ashems Songwe To: All Peace-Loving Malawians As a bona fide citizen of Malawi, I am equally concerned with continued occurrence of unnecessary violence, intolerance, acts of barbarism culminating into loss of lives and personal injuries, as we have witnessed in the past 24 – 48 hours in our country, Malawi, “The Warm Heart of Africa”. What is even more disturbing is the unfolding of usual tit-for-tat, blame-shifting, and hide and seek games, while sacred human lives are being lost, more being injured, and yet no one wants to accept responsibility. These unruly acts are instilling fear, terror and anxiety in the lives of our people – men and women, girls and boys, the very people that we are supposed to lead, protect, and show the spirit of unity. The “an eye for an eye” thinking will destroy this nation. Regardless of our differences – political, religious, ethnic, and affiliations, we are a one nation, called Malawi and we should never allow politics or misguided and selfish leadership to divide us. I am therefore making an appeal for a tone of restraint, self-control and tolerance to emanate and be exemplified from the top-down. As Malawians, we have traditionally been a united people outside politics, and I pray that we will remain so even during and after the political campaign period. And may God help us.
