From City & State First Read: Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose team included top aide Larry Schwartz and the governor’s two teenage daughters, won the first leg of the Adirondack Challenge on Sunday, defeating the state Senate’s boat by a full minute. Today the governor’s paddlers will face Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s team of rowers in perhaps the ultimate battle in state politics. Cuomo was gracious in victory and promised to redouble his efforts to defeat Bloomberg. “I saw some ugly things on the river there today,” he said. “Some of us have a lot of work to do on paddling coordination.” While Cuomo’s quick finish was the highlight of the day, the low point was when a press boat carrying Cuomo Press Secretary Matt Wing and several reporters passed another press boat carrying the governor’s director of communications, Melissa De Rosa, and City & State’s Aaron Short in the middle of the course. De Rosa vowed revenge, but she did not specify the particulars of her threat. Wing declined to comment. The 3.5-mile contest, the signature event of the governor’s festival promoting tourism in Adirondack State Park, featured 25 boats with 150 people rowing through the rapids on the Indian River.
