From Dallas County Treasurer Joe Wells, Woodrow class of 1966: Thanks to District 1 County Commissioner Theresa Daniel for sponsoring this Dallas County Commissioners Court Resolution honoring Woodrow Wilson High School 85th Anniversary. I was pleased to join with Dallas City Councilman Shefie Kadane and other Woodrow Wildcats in accepting the resolution and thanking the Commissioners Court for recognizing Woodrows 85 th ORDER NO._____________ DATE: APRIL 1, 2014 STATE OF TEXAS § COUNTY OF DALLAS § BE IT REMEMBERED, at a regular meeting of the Commissioners Court of Dallas County, Texas, held on the 1st day of April, 2014, on motion made by Dr. Theresa M. Daniel, Commissioner of District #1 and seconded by ___________________________________________________, the following Resolution was adopted: WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilson High School, named in honor of the 28th president of the United States, opened its doors in 1928 as the seventh high school in Dallas. “Woodrow” as it is affectionately known, was built with a Roaring 20’s budget of $750,000; and WHEREAS,the building has a Dallas landmark plaque, a Texas historic marker and has received recognition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a successful historic school. Its recent renovation won the Preservation Dallas Award; and WHEREAS, Woodrow manages to embrace change and diversity among it student population, while maintaining its traditions from generation to generation, as well as encouraging academic excellence; and WHEREAS, in 2013,Woodrow received the “Met Standard” ranking from the Texas Education Agency with distinction in three areas: English/Language Arts, Math and Top 25% progress. Its AP program has been ranked nationally by the Washington Post; and WHEREAS, the school offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Debate, Mock Trial, performing arts and athletics are just some of the areas that give the students a chance to excel. One debate team just placed in the top eight in state and another debate team just won the city championships at SMU and will go to nationals in Washington D.C.; and WHEREAS, Woodrow was selected as Dallas Independent School Districts first International Baccalaureate school. It is one of only 36 in the nation to offer the International Baccalaureate Career Certificate. The IB program is hailed as an outstanding means to promote greater rigor in the classroom, more academic challenges for students of all income levels, and an opportunity to burnish the educational reputation of the neighborhoods landmark institution; and WHEREAS, Woodrow is the alma mater of thousands of students who have achieved success in Dallas and around the world. A few notable alumni include: philanthropists Trammell Crow and Ruth Altshuler, two Dallas mayors, Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox, Councilmember Sheffie Kadane, musicians Dusty Hill of ZZ Top and Steve Miller, actor Burton Gilliam, frozen margarita inventor Mariano Martinez, Neiman Marcus Vice President Lawrence Marcus, Pulitzer Prize winners, automotive genius Carroll Shelby, the school’s two Heisman Trophy winners, Davey O’Brien and Tim Brown, and of course, our own County Treasurer Joe Wells; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dallas County Commissioners Court does hereby recognize and congratulate Woodrow Wilson High School for their 85 outstanding years serving the children and families of Dallas.
