From Dr. Frank Sibbalds Journal, September 1876 TUESDAY 12 Beautiful day. Blew fresh from the North during the night. Ther. 49 to 56. I rode to the bush in the forenoon. Fire almost in the middle of the bush, burned round the roots of 7 or 8 trees. Aunt Kitty drove me to the bush and picked me up again on her way from Sutton. I had a bad attack of Coryza, caused by the smoky atmosphere. Mary received letter from Lettie, first since her confinement, written in good spirits. WEDNESDAY 13 Beautiful day. Ther. 45 to 56. Wind variable. I rode to the bush both in the forenoon & afternoon. Paget went for the mail. Bush fires still raging, atmosphere full of smoke. I managed so far to keep those in Mucks bush pretty well under control. Tom Mossington called in the morning. I had a game of —sign with Georgie, whist afterwards. THURSDAY 14 Very smoky all day with heavy rain in the morning. Ther. 48 to 62. Wind East’ly. I rode to the bush both in the forenoon & afternoon & burned up a great deal of rubbish. Fanny drove Georgie into Sutton & brought the mail. Atmosphere very heavy & pitch dark at bedtime. I read part of Queen Mary Stewart by Schiller. Had a game of chess with Georgie & whist afterwards. FRIDAY 15 Beautiful day after a gale from the N. West during the night. Atmosphere clear of smoke. Ther. 48 to 68. Wind Northerly all day. Although ¼ of an inch of rain fell yesterday evening, still the fires in the bush remained almost as frisk as before. I rode to the bush both forenoon & afternoon and disposed of a large quantity of brush. Paget brought home the mail. Aunt Kitty & Georgie visited me in the bush.
