From Dusk Till Dawn - Pop quiz: what do you get when you have Quentin Tarantinos superb screenwriting and acting with Robert Rodriguezs crazy editing and directing? You get one of the best partnerships in film history! After getting the Oscars for Pulp Fiction, Tarantino and Rodriguez met one time and got to work on what would be a fun and badass tribute to drive-in horror movies. The end result is a lot of cool, many o many hilarities, and the start of something great. Seth and Richie Gecko are notorious, murdering and thieving brothers on the run from the law. They hijack a family for hostages and an RV for transport as they make their way to Mexico. Things suddenly change when they make their rendezvous and discover a large group of carnivorous vampires. They now must fight for their lives to survive... from dusk till dawn. What makes this movie so memorable is the sudden shift in tone. It starts off like another great Tarantino-styled crime thriller with witty dialogue and graphic content, but then becomes what is a drive-in horror movie featuring blood and gore. It can definitely be avant-garde for some, but the style the movie sets up makes it feel really funny and you roll with it. Its a nice story overall that can leave you entertained. With Tarantino present, youre guaranteed his traditional staples like his witty, dark humor. With that you have some great characters and performances. George Clooney is badass and cool as Seth Gecko and his brother chemistry with Tarantinos Richie is believable despite their notorious backgrounds. Harvey Keitel as the hostage father also does good as the legit good guy and surprisingly can stare a prosthetic vampire in the face and still come out an awesome actor. Other cast members include famous horror and exploitation figures like Tom Savini and Fred Williamson, all of which give hilarious and memorable performances. On Rodriguezs side of things, his camerawork is crafty and slick. The editing is also excellent with some shots making highly brief but strongly effective appearances. The action is good with a couple of nice shootouts and of course up close brutality with the vampires. The special effects are really good, showcasing good prosthetic work, solid animatronics, and gallons of blood. Its classic horror movie tropes done well and even call back to the classics. So if youre part of the crowd that just despise modern vampire cinema and are a fan of either of these two filmmakers, than please watch this. Monster movies like this are hard to come by nowadays because of the lack of credible talent and creativity. With this movie, you get all of that from the decent effects, excellent acting, and one of the most off-beat plot twists in movies.
