From Facebook Friend Jon Haslett: WHEN DID PATRIOT BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH FASCIST AND THE AMERCIAN FLAG A SYMBOL OF WAR? When I was a boy, I learned a patriot was someone who loves America. I recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. I read Thomas Paines Common Sense and I learned about Patrick Henry saying, Give me Liberty, or give me Death! I loved the Mel Gibson movie, The Patriot. I studied government and law at UT-Austin and the University of Houston. Until the war in Iraq, I thought I knew what a patriot was. But things have changed. Those who claim to be patriots now attack the very institutions that make up our government, such as the free ballot, compromise, and a balance of power among three branches. These patriots want to transform America into a theocracy with American populism replaced by Conservative Christianity. Our Civil War taught us to resolve conflicts with peace, but now the American flag is seen by other nations as a symbol of a constant war for oil. Thankfully, this group that calls itself patriotic is shrinking as its racist and anti-intellectual numbers dwindle. But they wont die peaceably. When riled, their venom spews forth like raw sewage from a ruptured wastewater pipe. Example: The backlash against the Coke Super Bowl ad.
