From Fernandina Beach, FL to St. Augustine is about 62 miles. In the winter when the days are shorter, this can be a long day for slower boats or folks just not in a hurry. There are several good anchorages and free docks along the way to break things up or if the weather turns nasty. Heading south, there is a nice free floating dock at Sisters Creek (page 61, TGBOA, Hampton Roads/Norfolk to Key West) or an anchorage on the other side of the river. Currents here can be strong. This is a good place to wait to cross the St. Johns River or wait for the currents to switch before heading up the St. Johns. 26 miles farther south is one of our favorite stops behind Pine Island (also page 61) with plenty of room and good holding. We did find the depths less than charted at low tide. Just before arriving at St. Augustine is the Vilano Beach free dock with a grocery store nearby for shopping. If the inlet is kicking up, Vilano Beach is a spot to wait it out.
