(From Jill H) I attended Detroit areas first Sunday Assembly this morning. There was a scheduling conflict and ours launched a week ahead of everyone else. The Secular Humanist Jewish Temple (lead by a gay atheist rabbi!) offered their building at no charge to the group. With little advertising, the place was full. Obviously there is a need for secular people to meet and greet. It is looking like we will be teaming up with the temple for a lot more events. For those who think atheists shouldnt assemble in a churchy way, I say not true. There is a great need for community. Churches know that. Thats how they keep people drinking the kool aid, by providing all the good community stuff people like. The secular community was represented by a wide swath of people: lawyer, non-profit organizers, activists, musicians, techies, etc. I thought the event was a total success and the energy was amazing. No rituals, no sermon, just a lot of fun and inspiration. Our area is so conservative and deeply religious that this was a wonderful way to gather, to mobilize, to come out to friends and neighbors. I think this will become a hub for secular activism across the region.
