From Jim Shepherds Speedway column in the March-April 1969 issue of Australian Motor Sports & Automobiles: Visitor in bad smash HEARTBREAK moment of the past month was the terrible accident in which visiting American solo rider, young Chuck Jones, was so badly injured at the Sydney Showground on January 14. Chuck, touring with dashing young DeWayne Keeter, was having only his second Australian meeting. Involved with a runaway bike on the entrance to pit corner, he crashed heavily into (and half over) the fence, appearing to strike a stanchion. Chuck is still in Sydneys Royal North Shore Hospital with multiple injuries and has amazed surgeons with his courageous fight for life. From what I have read this accident ended Jones career, which was a shame, as he had started to learn how to ride a speedway bike the Australian way, rather than sitting back and not keeping the power on during the turns. Do any group members have any memories of Jones racing at the Showground during the 1968-69 season?
