From: Joni and Friends Daily Devotional December 24, 2014 Christmas in the Stable While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:6-7 I leaned on my elbow looking out the farmhouse window while my mother and sisters cooked food and set the table for Christmas Eve dinner. As the snow fell in light, dry flakes, a soft haze made our barn almost disappear. During the late afternoon, I pulled on my jacket, stuffed a few carrots in my pockets, and hiked to the stable. I felt sorry for the horses and goats in the barn. All of us were going to open presents that evening, and I didnt want the animals to feel left out. It was quiet in the stable with the smell of hay, the cozy odors of horses coats, and a peaceful feeling that warmed me to the heart. The sound of horses crunching carrots. The quiet of my own breathing. I sighed, feeling protected and loved. Maybe it was the beauty of solitude contrasted against the bustling cheer inside the farmhouse, but in some way God spoke to me that afternoon. I felt His love in the solitude. ________________________________________________ Maybe you dont live on a farm. Perhaps when you look outside, you see the backyard of your next-door neighbor. Or you might live in an apartment. Or a trailer. You could be in a hospital or a nursing home. Not many of us live near a stable. But you know what Im talking about. Find that place to be apart. A place of quiet and solitude. It could be a walk to a nearby park, or the cool quiet of an upstairs bedroom. Wherever it is, make time to be alone today--with Him. Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, I am quiet and still before You. Blessings, Joni and Friends
