From Kathryn Xian: At the last BLNR hearing, Laulani Teale, mentioned the important fact that we must address the historical trauma that resides at Sand Island before we consider coercively placing houseless persons in an encampment which they have no part in establishing for themselves. No one on the Board really listened to her. Since contact, the Native Hawaiians have been eloquently saying over again what will work for ending poverty and houselessness. Its about time we listen because our government has proven that it has driven our community into this crisis with no immediate beneficial remedy. There is a way that establishing a houseless refuge will work on Sand Island: Give it back to the Native Hawaiians and step away so they may do their work. They will make it sustainable, inhabitable, and good. We took it away from them and made them houseless. We have since shown no better use for this land other than filling it with toxins and trash. You want an alternative? Watch this historical film and you will see and hear one clearly from the Hawaiians themselves. Lets stop fumbling with plans reminiscent of internment. Lets support something proven effective for centuries.
