Equity Bank to support rabbit rearing in Mwingi Wednesday, April 13, 2011 - 00:00 -- BY MUSEMBI NZENGU Equity Bank in Mwingi has partnered with a farmer to help youth groups venture into rabbit rearing. According to the manager Philip Nthumo, the bank will provide the capital that will be repaid after the agreed time. Nthumo made the announcement on Monday when he visited a rabbit project of renowned businesswoman Catherine Muthoni. During the visit, Muthoni who also keeps poultry said she exports her products to South Africa.“Rabbits are in high demand in South Africa. They use products from the rabbit to produce medicine of a superior quality,” said Muthoni who added that Kenya has never been able to meet the demand of the South African market. She said that the last order she received from the South African drug manufacturing firm was 3,000 rabbits but she was only able to deliver 600 rabbits.“I am ready to train anyone willing to take up rabbit rearing as a business. In return, I will buy the mature rabbits from them before I ship them to South Africa,” said Muthoni. She also hinted that the South African firm that buys rabbits from her was also planning to set up a pharmaceutical plant in Kenya. She said that through the Anglican Church of South Africa, she was flown to the country a couple of years ago where she was trained on the best ways of rearing rabbits. She said she was ready to share the skills with fellow residents in Mwingi.“In actual fact, rabbit rearing is extremely beneficial. A three month old rabbit can fetch up to Sh3,000 while a mature local male rabbit that would mount the females would go for up to Sh15,000,” she explained. Muthoni added that rabbit meat was highly nutritious and boost the human immunity against disease saying, “People living with HIV/AIDS are these days being encouraged by doctors to eat rabbit meat to improve their immunity systems.” She said that rabbits were roundly beneficial because their droppings can also be recycled to feed the rabbits or feed the fish while the urine is used as a pesticide for some crops. googleplus
