From Larry Campos: HERRI KIROLAK – BASQUE RURAL SPORTS. These are the terms used for a number of sports competitions rooted in the traditional lifestyles of the Basque people. They are called ‘deporte rural vasco’ or simply ‘deportes vascos’ in Spanish and ‘force basque’ in French. The first two videos exhibit competitive events and the third video depicts the plight of the Basque people who try to maintain and preserve their identity is France and Spain. We are all familiar with the Scottish Gatherings or Games, the various lumberjack competitions held throughout the United States, but are you familiar with the Basque Rural Games? These games are held in Spain and the United States. Admittedly, my association with Basques is limited to our social club members and the few Basques I have met at various Basque restaurants, but it is apparent to me that the majority of the Basque men are ‘stocky’ in stature and ‘barrel-chested;’ a perfect physique for conducting feats of strength. https://youtube/watch?v=kgP_CQc01sY https://youtube/watch?v=gDGPClBZ2Gw https://youtube/watch?v=I9Fw82uYw14
