From Larry Campos: MORTEROS O ALMIRECES Y MAJAS – MORTARS AND PESTLES. I was going to save this posting for the holiday season when many of us Spaniards still grind almonds to a fine powder for making ‘polvorones de almendras’, but I spoke to our benefactor Mike Muñoz Campos last night and he suggested that I post an article about mortars & pestles. It was only a suggestion, but can I refuse him? Mortars and pestles can be made of: metal (bronze or brass), hardwood, ceramic or stone. Darlene has my mother’s mortar and pestle and it is made of brass. I just looked at it and was surprised at the number of indentions on the head and neck of the pestle. Although brass is a soft metal, I can’t believe that grinding almonds to a fine powder would do this. Perhaps as children; my nephew and I played with them! Darlene’s grandmother had a wooden mortar and pestle. While researching this subject, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were and still are; decorative holders for display purposes. I cannot remember seeing a family member or friend who had their mortar and pestle displayed in this way. We found one on a website in Spain and almost bought it for our family room, but my mother’s pestle is too short to rest across the two arms. Please share with us; what type of mortar and pestle your family had and were they displayed alone (together) or within a holder? https://google/search?q=Mortero+y+maja+espanola&biw=1920&bih=911&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=9kYoVLCqGM_p8AHPj4GQBA&ved=0CG0QsAQ https://google/search?q=Almirez+y+maja+de+espana&biw=1920&bih=911&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=_lIoVMG9CcWhyATf-YCQAw&ved=0CFcQsAQ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortar_and_pestle
