TROOP D NEWS RELEASE December 14, 2014 Impairment Suspected in Crash that Kills Three People Longville – Three people are dead after a suspected impaired driver drove on the wrong side of a divided highway in Beauregard Parish and struck another vehicle head-on. On Sunday, December 14, 2014, at 6:23 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 171 near Barnes Creek about 5 miles north of the community of Longville. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 28-year-old Kristi B. Poteet was traveling south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 171 when the vehicle she was driving struck a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice driven by 41-year-old Ricky M. Gill of Singer head-on. The crash caused severe damage to both vehicles. Gill, Poteet, and a passenger in Poteet’s car whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin were pronounced dead at the scene by the Beauregard Parish Coroner’s Office. Gill and the passenger in Poteet’s car were not wearing a seat belt. There were no other passengers in these vehicles. Impairment on the part of Poteet is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Last year, 63 percent of the people who died in crashes investigated by Troop D were killed by an impaired driver. Motorists are urged to never get behind the wheel if they are impaired. Friends are encouraged to do whatever it takes to keep friends from driving drunk. Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Although not every crash is survivable, wearing a seat belt on every trip is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and wear their seat belt. Troop D has investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities this year.
