From Loveland Police Department: On 052914, a Larimer County woman reported an attempted scam to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. The woman had received a call from the 437 area code (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). The male caller identified himself as a Loveland Police officer and told the woman that her grandson was under arrest. The caller told the woman that she needed to wire a significant amount of money to “satisfy 10% of the bond” required for her grandson’s release. The woman responded appropriately by asking clarifying questions which further led to her belief that the caller was trying to scam her. She hung up on the caller and called the Sheriff’s Department. She did not wire any money. This is the only occurrence that has been reported to us where the scammer identified himself as a Loveland Police officer. Generally, the scammer will claim to be an official in another country as is noted in this FBI release from 2012 fbi.gov/losangeles/press-releases/2012/alleged-operator-of-grandparent-scam-indicted The Colorado Attorney General’s Office keeps a list of frauds and the techniques to not be victimized by those fraudsters on their website. The ever-changing “grandparent scam” is located here coloradoattorneygeneral.gov/departments/consumer_protection/consumer_fraud/fraud_advisories/grandparent_scam Additionally, the Larimer County Sheriffs Office has a list of common frauds and scams on our website, which can be found at: larimersheriff.org/site-page/frauds-and-scams
