From May 28, 1924 - Leo Dyer, Fred Foster, Frank Lewis and Burt Copass, all in jail here charged with violating the prohibition act, are daily exercising on the Tompkinsville-Glasgow pike - building roads. Bright and early each morning Deputy Walter Mansfield attaches a fifteen-pound ball and chain to the leg of each prisoner and sees that he gets to work and does his bit during the day. Thus is the mandate of the law carried out, for each sentence of these men carries a hard-labor clause that will be enforced by the court.
