From Meteorologist Don Paul (this forecast will be updated at 5, 5:30 & 6): Lake snow has lost some of its Lake Erie connection for the first part of the afternoon, weakening in the process. However, it will restrengthen this afternoon, slowly shifting north toward the nearby Buffalo Southtowns, and eventually coming close to South Buffalo by evening. Within this band, more whiteouts are likely with snowfall rates increasing to up to 3″ per hour by evening. To the north, blowing snow is a problem in open areas due to the gusty winds, producing that Harsh wind chill. Late this evening, the intense lake snow band will again begin to settle back to Ski Country, below the Buffalo Southtowns, where storm totals could reach 3 feet by mid-morning tomorrow. During Saturday, westerly winds will back to SW, and steer lake effect snow back north into and through the metro area by and during the afternoon. Some weakening is expected, but with gusty winds this band will have a significant impact on Saturday travel–just not so extreme as early today. It will be Bitter Cold tonight & tomorrow.
