From Mid Hudson News online: Anniversary of fatal military plane crash on Mount Beacon BEACON – Wednesday was the 69th anniversary of the fatal plane crash of a Navy plane about 150 feet from the summit of the northeast peak of Mount Beacon. The plane and its six military veterans were on their way home on November 12, 1945, just months after the end of World War II. Killed in the crash were Commodore Dixie Kiefer of Blackfoot, Idaho; Lt. Commander Ignatius Zielinski, 44, of Salem, MA; Lt. Paul Lloyd, 23, of Colorado Springs, CO.; Lt. Junior Grade Hans Kohler, 25, of Garfield, NJ; Aviation Machinist’s Mate Clarence Hooper, 23, of Greensboro, NC; and Seaman First Class David Wood of North Franklin, CT. The plane was bringing the men to their home base in Quonset, RI from Caldwell, NJ. Kiefer, known as Pacific naval hero “Captain Dixie” to those who saw the wartime documentary film, Fighting Lady,” survived a Kamikaze attack off Formosa in which he was hit with 65 pieces of shrapnel. His ship lost 144 men and 200 others were injured.
