From Mike Hulme As a school we continue to offer an extensive range of opportunities to our students in the firm belief that their experiences should be broadened beyond that of academic study. Indeed, excellent attainment and progress must be the ultimate goal of the school but the wider context of a holistic educational experience cannot be denied. With this in mind, we continue to run trips, extra-curricular activities and make a whole host of other opportunities open to the students. One such enterprise has been our continued links with South Africa and, importantly, Kayamandi High School in Stellenbosch. We have nurtured several contacts, links and liaisons with the school via a project called ‘Global Classrooms’ which is supported through the British Council. The opportunity to experience life in another part of the world has been offered to our students and those from the southern hemisphere via this scheme. We intend to host another visit from Kayamandi School to QPCS in the spring term of this year and we will also organise another South Africa trip for QPCS students in the summer term. A real flavour of the trip to experience life in another world can be viewed from the link given below which features two videos made by a sixth form student whilst on the visits. youtu.be/Nj80UVBeTEs?list=UUWi4a2sFE_XrKY8D5PB7KwQ Please look out for further details of the visits, links and opportunities to become involved. I have been delighted to witness the successes of our sixth form and their ultimate progression from their Advanced level studies. Each year we are hugely proud of those that move on to Higher Education and this the summer of 2014 has been no exception. Indeed, our consistent achievement of regular placements for students to Oxford and Cambridge demonstrates the aspiration of our highly performing individuals. Again this year we have a number who are to make applications to the Oxbridge colleges or a separate early submissions to study medicine. I would like to wish the 9 students participation in the Oxbridge process and our 5 prospective medics my very best wishes. Of course, all UCAS applications are to be processed during this term and all of the students will be working very hard on this. Good luck. Queens Park Day on the Sunday of last week was a great success. Fine weather and good numbers ensured that the whole day went very well and there was a great sense of community. Having the school stall made a great difference to our continued marketing profile in the area and it was great to have a chance to talk to people, see ex-students and connect with prospective families. This would probably be the 20th QP day we have attended over the years since its inception. Hopefully this time there will be very few households in the area, without QPCS pen or a school magazine both of which were eagerly distributed on the day. The PTFA were also able to draw people to our stall with an amazing array of wonderful cakes and associated goodies. I must thank them for their support for our school and raising further funds to support QPCS and a huge applause to the parents that donated the absolutely delicious treats to sell. We do have our annual Open Evening next week for prospective students entering the school in 2015. Parents may well have noticed several well positioned adverts on local bus stops and telephone kiosks to publicise the event. This will mean that because of this event, plus the staff training session during the day, that the school will be closed to students on Tuesday 23rd September. We will also start school on the following morning (Wednesday 24th September) at 9.25am to allow colleagues to remove displays and turn around classrooms following the Open Evening. Thank you for your understanding and support on this important matter. And finally, our new school reception area has been adorned with examples of excellent art work. The walls were designed with appropriate lighting to become display friendly and I am extremely pleased with the impact of the art pieces. This also supports our Artsmark Gold status as well as showing the undoubted talent of our students and the Art Department at QPCS. I am confident that all visitors will now get a warm, friendly and cultured welcome to our school in the future.
