From Mike Hulme On Thursday the sixth form attended a most informative and thought provoking assembly themed on Holocaust Memorial week. We were extremely fortunate to have two very important guest speakers, Lady Zahava Kohn and her daughter Ms Hephzibah Rudofsky. Via her daughter’s narration, Lady Znahava was able to give an insight into her extraordinary experiences as a child during the Second World War and the extremely engaging and moving story of her survival under extreme conditions with her family during the holocaust. Using actual artefacts and her own stories, the sixth form were transfixed and somewhat moved by the tales. We were so privileged to have this important period of history brought to life and were able to understand the most terrible atrocities perpetrated at the time. During the question and answer plenary session, the students acknowledged their understanding whilst also demonstrating their humility over the truly moving story. We were all so honoured to have such important and interesting guests in our school and I must thanks Ms Pawelek for organising this special event so well. Year 11 parents must be aware of the parent consultation evening taking place on Wednesday, 5th February (next week). All such events are really important, but this is even more so as all parents will be required to sign off the individual GCSE entries for their child. Please do make every effort to attend, check on your child’s progress and complete the necessary paperwork. Last week I commented upon the national ranking of the sixth form achievements in public examinations and the school’s ALPS ranking in the top 10% of school nationally. Indeed, the sixth form league tables have also been published of late and, again, QPCS has done so very well. We are now placed in an overall second place in all Brent schools for A level performance and our result scores for the ‘facilitating’ subjects for AAB grades places us as the best. The national figure for this measure is just over 15% whilst the school’s figure is 30%. This excellent rating is so heartening for our school and demonstrates the commitment to high standards and the excellence of teaching on the courses. Parents can see more on the sixth form league tables by visiting the DfE website and following the appropriate links. I would like to remind all families about the school policy on student absence from school during term time. This has been highlighted in the media of late and there is a clear government push to improve the attendance data across the country. It is worth noting that the attendance figure for our school is above the national figure and I am clear that this is due to the school’s strict line over the matter. Only in extreme circumstances will any absence be approved and any requests must be made directly to myself and in writing. Absence from school during term time can only serve to hinder student progress and I do hope that families will avoid making such requests.
