From Mike Hulme The Sport Celebration Evening was a huge success this week with well over 150 students being recognised and publicly praised for their sporting prowess. An upbeat occasion and very well supported, the event allows the school to highlight our undoubted strengths in this curriculum area whilst motivating the students either as part of teams or in their endeavours as individual sports women and men. I would like to thank the PE department, Mr Farlow, Ms Gilbert, Ms Mulhern, Mr Young and Ms Marr for their exceptional efforts and, in particular, Mr Tillin and Ms Ticmanis for their continued and positive leadership. As we have sailed through the first few weeks of our new academic year, I am able to start the ‘student of the month’ notification for years 7 to 9. This initiative was started last year to recognise individuals from the three year groups who have been nominate by their respective year teams. I am pleased to announce that the students of the month for October and therefore invited to cakes and goodies with me are: Mohamed Yousif; Lavine Karim; Niamh Wallace Bowling; Chantelle Holness; Sarah Banassi; Alisha Islam Well done to you all and keep up the high standards. I would like to remind all parents of the PTFA Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on Thursday, 16th October at 7.00 p.m. Please do remember that ALL PARENTS are members of the PTFA and can therefore play an important supportive role in being involved in the association’s activities and events. The AGM serves to ratify the constitution of the group and give interesting and useful information as to how the PTFA operate and with what purpose. I look forward to seeing you on the evening. Black History Month has started with the inclusion of some excellent input from my colleagues and visiting speakers. Indeed, the visit today from Dr Henry to talk to Year 11 was certainly inspirational, humorous and thought provoking in content. I must also praise the Year 10 Year leaders (Ms Gordine and Mr Howell) and the students who staged an excellent assembly focussed upon current black people of influence and an emphasis on our students sharing their experiences, hopes and dreams. We still have many interesting, motivating and items in the BHM calendar and I am sure that the students will report back via this newsletter over the coming weeks. Parents will need to be aware of a forthcoming Black Achievement Conference held at the London School of Economics (Saturday, 18th October). We intend to invite targeted students and families to attend. More details from Ms Jayawardene at the school. Finally, I do have concerns over the already mounting number of school uniform items that are in our lost property area. Items of uniform must be clearly marked with your child’s name to help identify lost items. This should be a simple task using a permanent marker pen or adhesive labels easily purchased from recognised suppliers. I am aware that it is hugely frustrating for parents when items are misplaced by students and the school also experiences similar worries when we are unable to link a found item with an appropriate owner. I will ask that all lost property items are brought to the school hall at the end of the school day on Friday, 24th October (the last day of the half-term).
