From Orange County Classroom Teachers: NEWS CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY, April 16 Teachers criticize district and state’s testing mania Orange County Classroom Teachers Association will hold a press conference to call attention to the FCAT testing taking place this week and the uncertainty of continued testing that will be occurring in subsequent years. The state of Florida just chose a testing company for next year’s tests although the assessments haven’t been developed and aligned to Florida standards, yet Orange County Public Schools want to tie this high stakes test to teacher salaries. The brand new test will be field-tested this fall using students from Utah. Florida students will have to take this newly created test next spring. “The fact that the District wants to tie teacher pay to a test that is field-tested in Utah is ridiculous”, said Diana Moore, President of Orange County Classroom Teachers Association. “One flawed test plus one flawed evaluation system equals disaster for students and teachers”, Moore added. The matter will be brought before the school board for a vote on Thursday, April 17th at 5pm. Orange County teachers are calling to make sure the District takes the time to get the new testing right and aligned to the new standards before tying test scores to pay. Given the State’s inconsistent track record on testing and school grades, we think this is a recipe for disaster.
