From Pastor Marvin Good Tuesday morning to you. We have heard the old adage that attitude is everything. Well, it actually comes straight from the Bible. According to Solomon and Proverbs 15:13, the inner disposition determines the outward expression. We have all seen it and experienced it. If we are sad about something or having emotional struggles, it shows up on our faces, right? Our emotional state is reflected in our outward appearance. Most of us dont have poker faces to hide how we are feeling. Thus it is easy to gauge the emotional and psychological state of a person just by looking at their outward appearance. This Proverbs intimates that we are controlled from the inside out, rather than from the outside in. This is such a huge statement, isnt it. We knew this, but we needed to be reminded of it. There is no denying that outward circumstances affect us emotionally, but it is our inner response to those outward events that determines our emotional, psychological and social response to them. Inner strength breeds outer courage and confidence as we are going through challenging circumstances. The first line of this Proverb demonstrates the inner disposition controls the outward expression. The second line shows that the emotional state can be allowed to control self-image as well. The proverb, as a whole, seems to be teaching that it is not so much what happens to us, but our attitude toward what happens to us that determines our view of ourselves and our lives. Because God is sovereign and we believe that he hears our cries and sees our circumstances and has everything under control, we can have internal confidence and courage that everything will truly work together for our good.
