From Saint Johns Fan Page (https://facebook/delphosstjohn) I was walking through the St John cemetery today and saw this stone. Does anyone know the story behind how Mary Lange died in Jerusalem in 1927? Fr Dave .... Pastor @ St. Johns, Delphos, Ohio. Buried on the North side of St. John’s Cemetery, near the entrance drive is our great-grandmother Mary Finkenhour Lange and her husband Henry (Gladen) Lange, parents of my grandmother on the maternal side. My mother was Mary Jeannette Nolte Menke, whose mother was Mary Adeline Lange Nolte. Great-grandmother Langes life dream was to go to Jerusalem and see and visit the city the LORD Jesus died in. When our Mom (Mary Jeanette Nolte Menke was two years old, her grandmother (Mary Finkenhour Lange) went to Jerusalem with great grandfather Henry. After travelling the Villa Della Rosa on Good Friday, she had a massive heart attack and went home to be with the Lord. Mary and Henry travelled to Israel on a steamer as part of a cruise, since commercial air flights were not the means of travel then. After her body arrived, the funeral service was conducted without opening the double boxed casket for obvious reasons and her body was interred in St. Johns cemetery, where it rests today. She had accomplished a life dream and that is where her life ended, according to my Mother, Mary Jeannette Nolte Menke. This PHOTO is of the Lange Family Identified: Far right great-grandma Lange /Mary Finkenhour (11-3-1860 thru 4-12. 1927) (The Delphos Herald on April 18th initially reported the death. Apparently her health had been failing for some years but was good at the time of the trip. They had visited the Madeira Islands, Algiers, Athens, Constantinople, and were spending Holy Week in Jerusalem. She died on April 13th and the corpse arrived in Delphos on June 3, 1927. The funeral/burial was on June 6th. There was a solemn Requiem Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.) Standing at her right shoulder is my grandmother Mary Adeline/Nolte (12-15, 1890 thru 6-28, 1953) married Carl Frank Nolte Their children: Ruth Mary Kill Haunhorst, mother to Bob Kill, Mrs. Robert /Sue Pothast (d) (Ruth’s daughter, Denny Kill, Linda Hilvers and Cindy Elwer. (Linda recorded from her mother’s memories: Our great-grandparents took a cruise in 1927, and she passed away in the Holy Land , during Holy Week in April . Since they were on a cruise, and there was no other way to get home easily , our great-grandfather had to finish the cruise , which ended in June . Our great-grandmother was in the hold of the ship in a casket, all of that time . My Mom , Ruth Kill, was 12 years old at the time, but she remembered all the chaos when the family members got the telegram telling of her death, and the grief involved with waiting for their Dad to get back home . Their oldest daughter, our Aunt Kate and her husband, Alex Stallkamp, and her husband travelled to meet the ship when it docked.) Other children of Mary Adeline: Albert Joseph (died at birth) Edna Jane Nolte (former mayor of Delphos and National Grand Regent of the C.D. of A), Mary Jeannette Menke (Jim Menke (Sheryl), Kathy (Russ) Suever, Joe (Sue) Menke, Barbara (Mike) Mesker, Janet (Jeff) Blackburn and Tim (Julie) Menke. (Mary Jeannette was the office manager at St. John’s Grade School for 26 years as well as Rectory desk receptionist for the same time and State Regent for the C.D of A.), Donald T. Nolte, whose wife Louise Burke survives in Lima with all her children and grand and great-grandchildren. Standing to the right of Granma Nolte is George Lange (5-6, 1884 thru 12-7, 1924) Married Catherine Dorsey, children: George, Robert. To Georges right is Carl Lange,(4-5, 1896 thru 1 15, 1974) Married Margaret Kundert. Children: Robert James Lange, William H. Lange, Susan Barrett; Standing in far left corner over Grandpa Lange is Kathryn Gertrude (10-25, 1886 thru 5-10, 1953) Married Alexander F. Stallkamp (founder of Stallkamp’s Pharmacy which was on the corner of Main and Second Streets, later moved to the east side of Main Street in the center of the block between 2nd and 3rd, and then again moved to the N.E. corner of 3rd and Main Streets). Children: Theodore Stallkamp, (father of the Dr. Todd Stallkamp and his children M.D.’s), and Mary Kay Brenneman (mother of Bob Brenneman (Dayton), who was a fellow graduate with me from St. John’s in 1964); Seated on far right: John Henry (Gladen) Lange (12-15, 1856 thru 10-27, 1933) Married Mary Finkenhour (Great Grandma) Seated in chair next to great-grandpa is Edna Jane (4-18, 1903 thru 3-13, 1990) Married Alfred Joseph Wiesberber. Children: George Joseph (died at birth) Eugene, and Richard; Seated in next chair beside Great Grandma Lange: Henry John Lange (6-29, 1900 thru 1965, Married Leona Scherger. Children: James, Thomas, and Mary Lee Depew (who resides in Michigan). Our Great-Grandparents leave a large and influential heritage. Many, many, many grands, great-grands, great-great-great grands and great-great-great-great grands….. and the generations continue. Great-Grandma Lange bought a large alabaster baby Jesus which was in the St. John’s Christmas Crèche for many, many years until it was retired and returned to the family. I visited Jerusalem twice, once in December, 1964 on an architectural trech from the University of Detroit and in November 2004, on Sheryl and my 25th anniversary as pastors @ New Hope. Both times... as I walked the Villa Della Rosa, I thought of my Great Grandmothers death at the end... I also thought of MY SAVIOURS DEATH at the end, where He gave His Life for US On Calvary!!!! John 3:16. Romans 10: 9 & 10! John 1: 12.
