From: Sandy Hearne Waits, a very good read! Ive been looking through old Louisiana newspapers from around the turn of the last century lately. I found something today that gave me pause and made me think about where America is now compared to where She was in 1913. Although what I found is from November 25, 1910, I think it is close enough for a little comparison. This was posted, around the time of Thanksgiving, in the Winnfield newspa...per at the time, The Comrade. It appears to have been originally posted in the Shreveport Times... THINGS TO BE THANKFUL FOR Let us be thankful--really and truly thankful--not only for what we have now, but for the infinitely better things we shall have in the days to come. Let us be thankful for our heritage of freedom--freedom of conscience, of education, of the press and of the ballot. Let us be even thankful because our lot was cast in the Twentieth Century, with its luminous hopes of larger freedom yet to be. Let us be thankful for noble discontent with things that are wrong, and for noble aspiration to set wrong things right. Let us be thankful because we are not too thankful for what we have--not so thankful that we can rest satisfied while there is an empty hand or stomach in a land of plenty. Let us be thankful that men are beginning to see the boundlessness of human opportunity and possible human happiness in a world that is rich enough to give every man a home, the chance to rear a family in comfort and to enjoy a serene old age. Let us be thankful for the growth of human sympathy, still more thankful for the fact that the world has come to see that if it would be saved, it must save itself by asserting the power and the magesty of organized humanity over money. Let us be thankful because we dare to hope that those who come after us will be thankful that we met the problems of our day and generation like men, and made the bounds of freedom wider yet.
