From St. Johns 2014-15 Looking Forward to the Journey Frankincense Devotional Booklet Saturday, November 8 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” (Matthew 5:13 NRSV) This verse follows the famous Beatitudes where we are called blessed. Now we are being referenced to salt. In Matthew’s time salt was very valuable and connected with healing and purity. It was also used for preservation. But when salt is mixed with other elements it becomes bitter and less pure. I’m wondering if Matthew meant that we need to try and stay pure and in the grace of God, or if other things start mixing in our lives, we will lose our “flavor” and become bitter and no longer blessed. Bad salt was then spread on the ground and walked on. I sure don’t want to be flat, bitter and walked on. I want to be blessed to be called “salt!” by Cindy Nelson
