From Staff Reports ---The incredible year for Chris Dula continued Saturday. The former South Iredell standout had a terrific year for the Catawba Indians. It was noticed, and the Texas Rangers selected Dula in the 25th round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. He was pick No. 760. The draft tracker on MLB’s website has Dula, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior, listed as a right-handed pitcher. The Indians’ website lists Dula as a pitcher, first baseman and third baseman. He did not make an appearance on the mound this year or in 2012, according to statistical reports. He last pitched for the Indians in 2011. Dula was selected as a consensus first-team All-American by Daktronincs and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for the 2013 season. He was second-team all-America for the American Baseball Coaches Association. Dula excelled in the batter’s box this year. He won the triple crown for the South Atlantic Conference with a .402 batting average, 54 RBIs and 14 home runs. Among Division II baseball players across the country, Dula tied for sixth in home runs and was sixth in slugging percentage. He started all 50 games he played for Catawba. His 74 hits, 54 RBIs and .484 on-base percentage were all team highs. So were his 52 strikeouts. He was second in doubles (14) and triples (2).
