From Susan Chapelle - standing for election as councillor of Squamish, in response to my question on her Facebook campaign page on her stand on GMO (I suspect she is pro-GMO believing GMO will solve worlds agriculture issues or hunger and does not see the link, I think, about foreign corporations taking control of our food security, nor does she see the link with the over-dependence with pesticides in the food and the environment). I shall be preparing a response to that in due course, and will air it apart from sending it to her. As a resident of Delta I consider it my duty to advise friends and neighbours in Squamish that, for elected officials, the first party he or she should consult prior to making decision on policy, even agriculture policy, is not farmers, but the consumers, or rather, people who elect her. It is the duty of the voters to remidn her of that. Meanwhile, here is her response, for the rest of the readers. QUOTE Not sure what your interest in Squamishs farming community is, but we have very little agriculture here unfortunately. My position on GMOs is that the farmer should be making choices for their land and their family, and that most politicians are not researchers. I am a researcher, I work in neuroscience. I understand the use of GMO, and I like technology resolving world problems. I am, despite knowing much about science, I understand enough about politics to know that politicians should not be making decisions without consulting farmers. You are from Delta are you just trolling around pages for elections? Do you think that under educated municipal politicians should be making policy without inviting the opinion of their farming community? UNQUOTE
