From T.C. Banning pedicabs from the center of our city has nothing to do with ...preserving public health and safety or avoiding traffic congestion... as stated in the ordinance. Banning pedicabs from the center of our city is a mean spirited effort to destroy an tiny industry that is too busy eking out a living to defend itself. In order to become fully licensed & legal, I needed to: *possess a U.S. Drivers License for more than one year; *pass a drug test; *undergo a physical examination; *complete a criminal background check, with no felonies or drug convictions-- even misdemeanors, or any crime involving moral turpitude; *pass a written examination on the minutia of the ordinance; *procure an abstract showing a clean driving record; *prove I had no debts to the city; *procure insurance at a cost of $800; *equip my pedicab with seat belts and turn signals; *display a registration decal, 311 sticker, cab number, fare structure, phone number and full size license plate; *pay a $1 per-day ground transportation tax-- filing monthly; *pay $400 for the above documentation and two annual licensing fees, both of which will need to be renewed after only 6 months. I was at the front of the line to do all of the above and was issued the very first operator & vehicle licenses. Yet I am still denied the use of the public right of way afforded to every other person and vehicle in the city. Please e-mail Alderman Tom Tunney at and ask him to introduce the modest amendments proposed by the Chicago Pedicab Association.
