From Thanksgiving: The Pilgrims First Year in America: From Thanksgiving: The Pilgrims First Year in America: On June 18, something exploded between two young men, Edward Doty and Edward Leister, both servants of Stephen Hopkins. History leaves no record of the cause of the argument, but to them, at the time, death was the only reasonable resolution. They fought a duel, stabbing at each other with swords and daggers. One got wounded in the hand, the other in the thigh. Both were arrested and punished by being tied into agonizing positions, probably the ankles back to the buttocks, the head between the knees, the arms behind the back. The position caused so much suffering that Governor Bradford felt pity, probably saw a lesson quickly learned, and had them released “upon promise of better carriage.” Read more at cheneybooks/thanksgiving .
