From The Front Porch at the Farm Saturday August 24, 2013 I’ve read that the majority of teenagers today hope to become eventual millionaires in one of two ways. It’s not by becoming a doctor or lawyer, and it’s not by starting their own businesses…. They plan to become millionaires by either winning the lottery or suing someone. Think about that… the future of our country, the upcoming generation, fully expects to live a life of comfort and luxury, and they don’t plan on accomplishing that through any kind of hard work or perseverance on their part. This is a terrifying thought. While you may have instilled different values in your own children, think about what will happen if a disaster does strike. You’ll be surrounded by people who expect to live comfortably off the hard work of others…. off our hard work and preparations. I’ve had a paying job since I was 9. When I was still a teenager, I was a life guard and taught swim lesions, managed a little league Ball Park, was a tech engineer that operated remote equipment for a weekly radio broadcast and finally before entering the Navy I was a stock person at a local 5 and 10 cent store. Each of those positions helped me learn how to communicate, think on my feet, keep up with world events, and develop much needed confidence. I’ve often been paid less than what I thought I was worth, and sometimes I’ve been paid more than I deserved, but less than what I would have liked. I’ve had jobs that ended and I had no idea what I would do to pay my bills or feed my family, but I found something, even when it was not what I was educated to do or enjoyed doing. I’ve worked so long I don’t know how to not work. And its one reason that I think the highest urgency of our government is creating the opportunities so people can work. Thought for Today; A job is not just how we put bread on our table. It’s how we put life and hope in our soul. Pennies do not come from Heaven. They have to be earned here on earth.
