From The Hands Free Revolution: The pressure to be perfect, to achieve, excel, conform, and win can be quite intense for our children these days. But Halloween is one day out of the year when kids get a break. On October 31st, we simply let our kids be kids. We let them wear the costume of their choosing. Whether they’re dressed as a zombie, fairy princess, Power Ranger, or good old Mickey or Buzz, beneath the make-up or the mask is a smile because they’re confident they made the perfect choice. We allow them to run excitedly from house to house, eyes growing wider as the bucket fills. There is no right or wrong way to get around the block; there is no first or last place, we just trick or treat until legs grow tired or buckets get too heavy. And when we get home, we watch as our kids delightfully dump their entire collection on the floor and bask in their candy glory. We let them eat more treats than they should. “Yes, go ahead,” we say to our little goblins, “your costume does serve as a napkin tonight.” Halloween is a day where kids can simply be kids. No mistakes, no expectations, just freedom and happiness. So on this Halloween day, I will turn on my porch light for the trick-or-treaters. And when I do, I will think about the radiant light that shines from my child—the light that brightens her face when she is loved “as is.” Whether that’s in costume or mismatched clothes, Whether she’s licking her fingers or using a napkin, Whether she’s fastest or slowest, Whether she’s singing in tune or out, I want to love her simply “as is.” Because the reality is, she won’t be a kid forever—so let me give her the freedom to be one while she can. © Rachel Macy Stafford 2013 Thanks for being part of The Hands Free Revolution – letting go of distraction & perfection to grasp what really matters.
