From Tralee Outlook GEARING UP FOR THE RING OF NORTH KERRY CYCLE CHALLENGE PDF Print E-mail WRITTEN BY ADMINISTRATOR THURSDAY, 01 AUGUST 2013 09:27 It will be a case of tears and gears as cyclists from all over Kerry and Limerick, fresh from their Ring of Kerry exploits, take on a new challenge…..the Ring of North Kerry. Taking place on August 10th, this is the third year of the event which has grown rapidly to become one of the real highlights on the leisure calendar. “The cycle route itself is varied and challenging with rolling countryside, sea breezes and testing climbs to contend with. The cycle is also characterised by the friendly atmosphere and legendary refreshments en route,” said Johnny Joy, chairman of Finuge Freewheelers CC.The cycle is jointly organised by Finuge Freewheelers Cycling Club and the Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Service and last year attracted 460 cyclists. “Onceagain there are two routes, a 70km spin and a 120km route. The cycle begins and ends at Finuge GAA grounds. Registration is from 7.30 to 9.30 on the Saturday morning. There is also a pre-registration on the website which secures your place. Cyclists of all abilities are welcome and there will be full mechanical and medical back up on the day. The cyclists will leave in a controlled group start at 9.30 behind a pace car until we get on the Tarbert road. Registered cyclists are free to leave earlier but may not have on-road back up available. Once again generous refreshments will be provided along the route with two food stops at Ballybunion and Ballyheigue. Two of the highlights of the route are the climbs up Beal Head and up Kerry Head, both with stunning views. The entire route will be clearly marked and marshalled.” The website for the cycle with all the information is ring-of-north-kerry-cycle/.
