From University of North Carolina Tar Heels Basketball: Happy birthday to a UNC favorite, G/F Steve Hale (86), who was a player best known for being a scrappy shooting guard who wasnt afraid to go after loose balls and follow well on his defensive assignments. Steve averaged 10.5 ppg in his junior and senior years and shot a career 81% FT. One of the most memorable moments of his career came at the opening round of the 1985 NCAA Tournament when he was going for a lay-up and was cut underneath and landed hard on his left side (his shooting side), causing him to injure his right shoulder and miss the rest of the tournament. After his graduation, Steve pursued a medical degree. He went on to marry his college sweetheart and they together have four children. Today, Steve lives in Vermont and is a pediatrician.
