From Water Liberty: Hey there, Would you willingly swish oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes? What if it was proven to be a super effective way to keep up with oral hygiene, keeping your pearly whites white and eliminating bad breathe. Oil Pulling, an ancient Ayurvedic dental hygiene technique has recently made its way over to the West and unlike some so-called natural home remedies, its not a practice thats based on pseudo-science. Recent studies show that oil pulling actually helps against gingivitis, plaque, and pathogenic microorganisms that cause bad breathe. How? Most microorganisms inhabiting the mouth consist of a single cell. These cells are covered with a lipid, or fatty, membrane, which acts as the cells skin. When these cells come into contact with oil, a fat, they naturally adhere to each other. Basically, you remove a large amount of the bacteria and plaque in your mouth each time you do this. Oil pulling is incredibly simple and effective. How to Oil Pull: First, pick an oil. Most people use coconut oil as it also has the added benefit of lauric acid, which is well-known for its anti-microbial agents, and it actually tastes good. But, you can use any other vegetable-based oil. Then, take a tablespoon of that oil and swish it around your mouth for 10-20 minutes. (Preferably on an empty stomach) Be gentle here. There is no need to be as aggressive as with mouthwash because you will be aiming to do it for 20 minutes and you don’t want to get a stiff jaw! The oil will almost double in size as it draws in saliva and bacteria. Be sure NOT to swallow it, after all it’ll be full of toxins and bacteria and you’ll want to be spitting it out, not swallowing it. Once the 20 minutes are up, spit the oil out into the trash- not your sink, where the oil may solidify and block up the drain. Finally, brush as you normally would. You may find it rather disgusting at first having your mouth full of oil, but you will get used to it after a few times. Also if a tablespoon is too much your first time, start off with a teaspoon. I find the best time to do this is in the morning. I wake up, put the oil in my mouth and go on with my regular morning errands: checking email, showering, etc. Test it out for yourself and see what happens.
