From a Harris County Sheriffs Deputy who sent this poem to me: Hero He stands in silence, as others cry. He lifts a helping hand and lends a strong shoulder. He is there when others are in need. He is the fireman, the military man, and the policeman. Where there is chaos, he is there fighting for order. When there is a tyrant, he is there to smite the tyranny. Where there is evil, he is there to overcome the unjust. With the battles, wars, and fires, he is there on watch standing alone. He faces what others fear, with courage. He enters a war-zone everyday, with thoughts of protecting his friends, family, and country. He gives little thought to his own self and risks all for loved ones and strangers. When the conflict is through and he starts that long journey home, it is often a dark lonely tunnel. The people around him know not what he has seen. The horrors others have committed. The broken bodies, dreams, and hopes. He seeks solace in the company of others that have lived his life. He looks for peace in the smile of a friend or child. He looks for something normal to keep him in touch. At the end of his journey he stands at attention. He looks back on his life of sacrifice. There is a tear on his face for all he has given up. But even more, there is a smile on his lips knowing that he would do it again to protect those he loves. He is a Hero
