From a Postcard post by Darcy Murray Jan. 8/2015. Hello all. I started identifying and marking the buildings and points of interest in Darcys find, trying as best I could to fill in the blanks while remembering to label them according to the year(s) represented in this picture post. Its something Ive always wanted to challenge my memory to see how far I could get. I started to run out of space so I thought I had best stop and post before I screwed-it-up entirely!.... Then, it suddenly struck me that this was the perfect opportunity to present the case for an honorarium for a rather special friend of ours. Mr. Sam Cancilla. Im sure many who are familiar or aware of at least some of Sams worthwhile endeavors, as well as the recent tragic event that took him from us. I believe I could safely say that I can express the wishes of all his friends and acquaintances and that we would like to see Sam remembered in a more concrete way by the city he represented, worked passionately for and loved for so many years. So, we have added this request for consideration to our Mayor Jeff Lehman as well as the entire city council to please discuss and consider Officially designating by plaque or signage and future upgrading, the park area with historical gazebo that is currently facing on Dunlop Street across from the Bayshore Tower complex .The proposed park will encompass existing land running down to the shore line, and adjacent to the empty property formally housing the building(s) known historically as Lakeview Dairy. Mr. Cancilla while on Barrie council personally fought to save from developers this land and building(s) for public use. Mr. Cancillas persistence and passion won said battle to pass on the areas recreational and/or pleasurable pastime usage for all city residents and visitors to enjoy in perpetuity. The proposed Park is centrally located in the Heart of the city on the shore of the Bay that he grew up in. We propose that the area be officially designated: The Sam Cancilla Lakeview Park. It is our hope that this designation and naming, with due consideration could go forth as quickly as possible and that his family be notified and requested to attend an Official Park Naming Ceremony perhaps in the spring of 2015 or as soon as possible, and with all due respect to the family. Once the legalitys and preparations for the property, signage and ceremonial presentation have been completed council can be assured that they have done the right thing by a great man and representative of the people. I have noted on the attached post card picture, that I reworked and was originally posted by Darcy Murray the area and name of the proposed Park. Please Mr. Mayor Leyman and members of Barrie Council consider this heartfelt request by The People of the city of Barrie. Ill post this on the If you grew up in Barrie website also. Its worth a try.The very least It can do is to get other people thinking. Perhaps someone can take it to council or present it the Mayor Leyman?
