From a letter from Col. Summer to the War Department, in the New York Times, I fail to see the usefulness of the Rio Grande. You cant wash in it - that is you can wash in, but if you have the slightest sense of decency you wont unless you have been to Germany and contracted a depraved taste for wallowing. In that case the Rio Grande would suit you exactly. You cant drink the water for it isnt water, and you will find it not tractable as a means of irrigation. It is true that the natives construct with infinite toil and no little skill long ditches called acequias by which to convey the alleged water from the river to their fields...The Rio Grande has but one redeeming trail, and that compels me to speak of it with affection and respect - it sometimes drowns a greaser. What do you think of the way americanos saw up in the 1850s?
